    LEGACY TEXT FROM WG2

    What does this website do?

For WG2, the website mainly focuses on how the Trustees, Council, and Membership meetings could work in the future government structure. (As you all aware, separate work is going on to look at Membership categories, rights, privileges etc - we will join this up later.)

The aim of this website is to help the Working Group to develop a picture of what you want for College's governance, to present to Council. When there is agreement, Brodies can turn this into legal drafting, which eventually will go to the Membership.. Brodies will also advise Council on which decisions would require changes to the Charter, which would require changes to the Laws, and which would require both.

From the bottom of this page, you will be led through a series of four main steps, that allow you to consider what sections should be in the updated Laws, some foundations we need to agree, topics to be decided later in "The Fridge" and then those three sections of the Laws in detail (Trustees, Council, and Membership meetings).

A note on the sections of the Laws where I've suggested detailed proposals

In Step 4, you will be asked to review three sections of the Laws in detail: Trustees, Council and Member meetings.

I have set up a series of proposals for you.

To try to make this easy, wherever possible, I have suggested one option rather than asking you to consider and decide between several choices.

    - Sometimes, this option will be just what you do right now, because it’s fine as it is.

    - Sometimes it will be what I think is the best approach from a range of options.

    - And occasionally, there will be equally weighted choices and I will just pick one.

Please note that it wasn't always possible to say "this is what you do now, and this is what will be different", because sometimes your current Laws aren't clear, sometimes custom and practice has moved away from the Laws, and sometimes there's nothing to compare with at the moment.

    Sharing your feedback

Throughout this process, there will be two sorts of feedback you can give: general and specific.

For each main discussion area, you'll be able to give a general opinion on the entirety of what's there.

And as you move through the detailed proposals for the "foundations", Trustees, Council and Membership meetings, you’ll be able to give detailed feedback on each proposal.

When everyone has responded, I will gather all the feedback and prepare a first draft of what I think you want for the detail of the College’s governing documents. We can then discuss this at the Working Group 2 meeting.

    .

  • What's next?

It's time to start reviewing the proposals. To help you easily navigate all the sections and share your feedback, the website will lead you through a series of four steps, as outlined below.

To move to the next step, click the turquoise button at the bottom of each page.

    1

Step 1 - The overall structure

This outlines how the Laws could be grouped into sections (based on what passes for normal in other Royal Charter bodies). You will be asked for your feedback on these recommendations.

    2

    Step 2: Foundations

This sets out some foundations that we will need to agree in order to make decisions. You will be asked for your feedback on these.

    3

    Step 3: The Fridge

In this sections, I have added a set of topics that we can park for now and return to in the future. I've put them here so that you know they are not forgotten. You will be asked for your feedback on these, AND you can return to the Fridge later to add your suggestions for additional topics and discussions.

    4

Step 4: The Laws - decisions

This is where you will be asked to consider detailed recommendations for three main sections of the Laws. You will be guided through a survey, and asked for your feedback as you go.

    5

Step 5: Returning to The Fridge

If you wish, you can return to the Fridge at the end of the process, to add anything else that you've thought of.
